Furthermore, we explore the impact Babaji has had on people and the significance of its existence.
Prehistoric legends and prophecies, the origin of Babaji
The legend about Babaji is said to date back to its origins to prehistoric times. Although no specific records have been kept, its existence has been conveyed through oral traditions and ancient literature. Of particular interest is the prophecy in the ancient Indian scripture, Shiva Prana. Shiva Prana is a systematic summary of myths and philosophies about Shiva, one of the main Hindu gods, in which it is predicted that Shiva will appear in the form of a human being.
According to prophecies, Lord Shiva appears at the end of Duvaparayuga and the beginning of Kariyuga, and is said to help humanity throughout the time of Kariyuga. This prophecy is one of the reasons for interpreting the appearance of Babaji as an incarnation of God Shiva.
Kariyuga is considered to be the most decadent of the four periods of Hindu cosmology (Yuga), and is thought to be the collapse of morality and ethics, and suffering and confusion. During such an era, the prophecy that Babaji, the incarnation of Lord Shiva, appeared and would offer a helping hand to the people gave many a ray of hope.
The intersecting of manifestations and testimony from the 19th century onwards, history and legends
Records of Babaji have become particularly prominent since the 19th century. Paramahansa Yogananda's book, "Autobiography of a Yogi," played a major role in making Babaji's existence widely known. Yogananda introduced Babaji as an immortal saint and spoke about his mysterious power and merciful personality. Rahiri Mahasaya, the guru of Yogananda, also taught Babaji and conveyed his existence to many of his disciples. Sri Yukteswa, a disciple of Rahiri Mahasaya, wrote "Sacred Science" under the direction of Babaji and systematically explained the philosophy and practice of yoga.
Yogananda also states that Babaji had given the initiation of yoga to the great ancient teachers Shankara (788-820) and the poem Saint Kabir (1440-1518). These statements suggest that Babaji's existence is not merely a legend, but also deeply involved with historical figures.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, there were numerous documents regarding the manifestation of Babaji, and testimonies from people who actually witnessed it. These testimonies make Babaji's presence feel more realistic, yet also add to its mysticalness.
Miracle Tale: Episode of Resurrection of the Dead
Many miraculous stories are essential when talking about Babaji's existence. In particular, the episode that raised the dead is widely known as a symbol of Babaji's supernatural powers. Below are specific episodes of resurrection of the dead, excerpted from "The Legend of Babaji."
The well-known Dr. Hem Chand was a knowledgeable man who was able to manipulate 52 languages and was known as a devotee of Babaji. He wrote a book about Babaji, in which he presents an incredible episode in which Babaji revives him when a man named Joshi died of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Joshi suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis for many years and finally died of illness that day. The family and relatives were surrounded by deep sorrow, and the bodies were taken out of the house and placed under a lemon tree. Joshi's mother, heartbroken at Babaji's feet, prayed. "Lord, you have come to me well in times of such sadness. Please give your deceased son once again, through your grace."
Babaji replied with a smile. "Don't worry. Your son is fine." However, the people there were strong doubts. They whispered to each other what he could do with the dead body, which had already died.
Suddenly, Babaji began to look serious, folding the branches of the tree on which the bodies were placed and began a jarra (ritual of chanting certain verses and mantras). After about a minute passed, Babaji told his grieving mother. "Don't worry. The warmth has begun to return to my body." A further minute later, he said, "I can feel my pulse starting to hit."
People stood in shock and stunned. He couldn't understand what the hell is Babaji doing, Joshi was certainly dead, but how and where he could call him back.
After a while, Babaji asked if anyone could get breast milk. The milk was ready soon, and Babaji gave it to Joshi little by little, and opened Joshi's eyes with his own hands.
Everyone there saw Joshi come to life and look around in surprise. They had heard that Babaji was a manifestation of God, but they were deeply moved to witness the miracle in person.
The incident was reportedly occurring in 1910 or 1911, and Joshi reportedly died in 1950 or 1951, with a new life expectancy of about 40 years.
This story of resurrection of the dead has been widely told as an indication of Babaji's supernatural powers. Although these stories are difficult to scientifically test, they are sources of deepening their faith and encouraging hope for Babaji followers.
