Myths, history and the message for the future
Izuyama Shrine was worshiped by Minamoto Yoritomo as the guardian deity of the Seii Taishogun, and was deeply revered by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The secret book, "Souto Sanhiketsu Emaki," is the key to unraveling its eternal history and mystical origins. This picture scroll is a written note of the story of the gods passed down there in the Kamakura period when Izuyama Shrine was once a major sacred site for the syncretization of Shinto and Buddhas as "Hashiri Yugongen" and has been considered to be a truly secret secret, as it is only permitted to view it by priests of generations.

In order to pass on this secret book widely on the public, a grand project was realized in which Japanese literature researcher Abe Mika wrote the lyrics, calligrapher Okamura Chitose was the author of the guiding artist, ceramic artist and painter Nakamura Yoshiraku was the artist, and Horiguchi Keiko, a chief priest of Hatsuki Shrine, dedicated the thoughts of those involved in the creation of the picture scroll, to the gods as prayer letters. The picture scroll, reconstructed with easy-to-understand text and pictures, was reborn as a masterpiece that lasts approximately 30 meters, covering a total of four volumes, and was revived in the present day.
"The Secret of the Suzuyu Mountain" revolves around a story about Hatsukihime from Hatsushima visiting the land of the gods of Mt. Izu, where she receives precious teachings. In particular, the deep love and wisdom contained in the name of God, Masayago Katsusa Hayahioshi Homimi Mikoto, gives readers great emotion and revelation.
Among these picturesque scrolls, the "First Wood" plays a particularly important role. Below, we will analyze the contents of "Hakuki Volume" in detail based on text reproduced from the official Izuyama Shrine website, and unravel the deep connection between Izuyama Shrine and Hatsushima that is contained therein.
"First Tree Volume" - The beginning of myth and the appearance of Hatsukihime
The story goes back long ago to the fifth generation of Emperor Koaki, counting from Emperor Jimmu, the beginning of the human world. A shrine maiden appears from the blue bottom of the sea, riding on a shining mikoshi of a shining kingdom. Her name is Hatsuki. She builds a small island on the sea and sets up a Imperial Palace. People named the island Hatsukijima, and eventually they began to call it Hatsushima.
Meanwhile, Mount Izu was known as Mt. Kujirayama as a sacred mountain where the gods live, and was deeply respected by the people. Hatsukihime rides a buffalo from Hatsushima and travels to Mt. Kujira every month, wandering around the mountains, watching the scenery of Hatsushima where white waves crash into them.

This description suggests that Hatsushima and Mt. Izu have had a close relationship since ancient times. The depiction of Hatsukihime riding a buffalo to Mt. Izu may suggest that there was a maritime route connecting the two, and that there was a thriving exchange. Furthermore, the fact that Hatsukihime had been making a pilgrimage to the sacred site since the time when Mt. Izu was called Mt. Kujira, shows that Hatsushima was an extremely important place in telling the origins of Izuyama Shrine.
Discovery of Yuno-no-sen and the revelation of Moonlight Doji
Years pass, and one day, Hatsukihime heads to the top of Mt. Kujira, as usual. There she discovers a spring of hot spring that gushes out from the foot of the mountain. The spring is pure and clear, and the warmth of the water is pleasant. At the bottom of the spring, a golden turtle was shining with a divine ring of moon on its back.
Then a faint voice came to mind, and a beautiful child appeared from within the circle of the moon. Hatsukihime asked the Doji in awe. "The one who appears as the moon ring that lays at the bottom of the water is a precious god. What name God is he? Who are you, who have emerged from that light?"

This scene is one of the most important scenes in "The Secret of Suzuyu Mountain." The Yuno-no-izumi discovered by Hatsukihime was the place where the later Izuyama Shrine originated, and the appearance of Moonko Doji marks the beginning of the oracle. Gekko Doji says that Hatsukihime is "a proud shrine maiden who is based on the blood of an ancient shrine maiden," and has inherited the "power of Mother God who nurtures all things." These words suggest that Hatsukihime is not just a shrine maiden, but an existence with sacred power.
The Doji answers. "First tree. A proud shrine maiden who is based on the blood of an ancient shrine maiden. You have inherited the power of the Mother God who nurtures all things. With that great power, the decree that you should worship is nothing more than the god of this moon circle. My name is Moonlight Children. This is how I have appeared to you to tell you the name of the god of the moon circle and its secret origin. Be sure to listen."
The genealogy of the gods and the origin of Shoyago Katsusa Hayashi Hitten Ninja Homison
Moonko Doji begins to speak. "A long time ago, two gods, Izanagi and Izanami, who created this country, gave birth to one goddess and three male gods. The goddess of Hiji, Tsukigami, Hiruko, and Souwanami. The goddess of the sun, because they are beautiful, shining, they were honored as Amaterasu Omikami. The goddess of Tsukigami was praised as Shoyago Katsusahayahimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimehimethu. My father. His mother's name is Tsukiman Chijihimehimehimehimehimehimethu. Eventually, Amaterasu Omikami became the master of ruler of this country, and my father Tenninhomison became the master of the country's government. Yuno-sen is the home of my father's lord, and the moon is the heart of the lord."
This episode features important gods in Japanese mythology. Amaterasu Omikami is worshiped as the sun god and the ancestor of the Japanese imperial family, while Shoyago Katsusa Hayashi Hitten Ninja Minomon is enshrined as the moon god and as the main deity of Izuyama Shrine. Moonko Doji reveals that he is the son of Shoyago Katsuhayahitsuhiten Ninja Minosako, and says that Yunoizumi is Takanosako's house and the moon is Takanosako's heart.
The meaning of Yuno-no-sen and the symbol of the moon mirror
Hatsukihime asks Doji. "Why is Satoru living in the Yunosen? Why did Satoru's heart appear as a mirror of the moon?"
Moonko Doji answers solemnly. "There is a deep reason for this. Hundreds of years from now, those in the late world will be caught up in foolish selfish desires and thrive like water and fire. At that time, Satoru will live in the Yunosen, hoping that he can regain a warm, harmonious heart, like a hot water made of water and fire. It is the same as that Soru's heart is a mirror of the moon. A man who forgets his honest feelings and is ruled by distorted feelings, is as hard as the inhabitants of the dark world. It will close the stake. Therefore, Lord will become the moon, illuminate and guide the darkness of man's hearts. The phases of the moon are the way of admonishing that this world is always going to be transferred. In the first place, water is the spirit of the moon, and fire is the spirit of the sun. Because Lord is the moon god, he has the power to control water. He then uses the precious power of Amaterasu Omikami, the sun god, to warm water into hot water. All things in this world are all things that meet and one thing is born."
In this section, the meanings symbolized by the Yunosen and the Moon mirror are revealed. Yuno-sen represents a state in which the opposing elements of water and fire are in harmony, symbolizing the harmony of people's hearts. The moon mirror has the power to illuminate the darkness of people's hearts and regain honest feelings. Moonlight Doji teaches the law of the universe that all things are created by combining two elements: water and fire, and yin and yang.
The role of the Moonlight Doji and the meaning behind the name of God
Moonko Doji continues to speak with a gentle smile. "I can freely change my appearance and name. I appear before people, sometimes mercy when I give up, and help the Lord's government. I am always on the Mount of Putuo Lao in the South Seas, but I sometimes take care of him when he is away."
When Hatsuki Princess respected and worshiped Moonlight Doji, the Doji preached with sincerity. "The name Shoyago Katsusa Hayashi Hitten Ninja Minoko has a deep, hidden meaning. Masaya is the rule of Takashi that always puts true and honesty. Gokatsu shows that a straightforward, unconventional mind is a strength that will never overcome anything. Katsuhayashi Day is the day that quickly erases the power of Takashi, which overcomes evil things with a honest heart. This is a word that compares to the momentum of his life. Tennin is a way of praise for Takamamahara's joy in order to save others, and praises him as he endures Takamagahara's joy in the world. And so it is Houu. The best news that pleases Satoru's ears is that a person with an evil heart will realize his own mistakes and regain his honest heart. The joy of Takamaga's joy will enrich the country, and make people and rice ears well fruitful. Therefore, it is respected as Houuu."
This part can be said to be the climax of "The Secret of Suzuyu Mountain." Moonko Doji explains the deep meaning contained in the name of God, Shoyago Katsusa Hayashi Hitten Ninja Minomon, and explains the importance of an honest heart. This name expresses the joy of being always righteous and honest, that an honest heart is the source of strength, that one has the power to overcome evil things, endure hardships to save people, and that the hearts of others will be purified.
What to entrust to Hatsukihime and a message to the future
After preaching the origin of the hidden god's name, Moonko Doji took Hatsukihime's hand and spoke. "You have to ask for it. Only you can do. One day, two children will be born. From the amber of cedars, warmed by the light of the sun and the moon, a girl and a boy will be born. I want them to raise them."
It was also the wish of Father God: Tenninhomison and Mother God: Tsubata Chijihimeson. (※The deity enshrined at Izuyama Shrine.)
In this final scene, Moonko Doji entrusts Hatsukihime with the care of two children born in the future. These two children are Tenninhomison and Tsubata Chijihime, the main deities of Izuyama Shrine, and Hatsukihime play an important role in raising them.
